Mead Finds Banking Career Through College Internship

While she was studying finance at Iowa State University, Jody Mead was introduced to the world of banking through an internship. Working at a small bank in Des Moines, she was able to test the waters in many different areas within the bank, including the loan department, teller line and collections.

Today, Mead is the internal audit and credit review manager for Northwest Financial Corp, the holding Company for Northwest Bank and Creston-based First National Bank in Creston. “I’ve had opportunities to try on new roles and see what fits the best, and it’s been such a joy to know that the knowledge I gain from one role will only make me a better banker overall.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I started as an intern with a small bank in Des Moines while I was in college. I worked in the loan department, the teller line and even helped with collection calls. It was a great way to learn about the different areas in banking.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
During my junior and senior year of high school I was the chef at a small restaurant in Dyersville. On Mondays I would often be the only person in the kitchen. Sometimes we had just a few customers and there would be time to catch up on prep work for the week. And sometimes a big group would walk in and I’d be scrambling for hours. I loved that no two days were the same and no two customers were the same. This has really applied to my career in banking as well.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
There really is something for everyone in banking! I’ve had opportunities to try on new roles and see what fits the best, and it’s been such a joy to know that the knowledge I gain from one role will only make me a better banker overall.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA has been a great resource for training, articles on the industry, best practices recommendations and peer groups that help me grow in my career and also strengthen the banks we work for.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love to spend time with my husband and three kids — cooking, movies and family game nights. Our kids are getting older and it’s been fun to share movies or shows we watched while we were growing up. I’m excited for a post-COVID road trip to a beach and time relaxing with a good book as soon as possible!

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
To those much has been given, much is expected.
