Kilburg Brings Lessons From Day Care to Banking

Before Darla Kilburg began her banking career, she ran an in-home day care. Once her children started school, she decided to look for a part-time job that was better suited to her new schedule. That’s when she accepted a customer service representative position at a bank. She said her work in day care taught her many lessons that translated to her banking career, including multitasking, scheduling and listening to the concerns of others.

Twenty-three years later, Kilburg is still in banking, working as the regional CSR supervisor at Fidelity Bank & Trust in Tipton. “A career in banking is an excellent choice for people who like to be part of helping their communities and the people who live in them.”

How did you get into banking as a career?
After our children started school, I saw an advertisement for a part-time CSR. The hours were just what I was looking for at the time and now, after almost 23 years, I’m grateful for the opportunities Fidelity Bank & Trust has given me.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
Prior to working in the banking field, I was an in-home day care provider for my children as well as several in our community. This occupation taught me many important lessons — multitasking, scheduling and, probably most important, listening to the concerns of others (even if at that time the concern was “Tommy had the blue truck and I want it!”)

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
A career in banking is an excellent choice for people who like to be part of helping their communities and the people who live in them. It might be helping a senior citizen balance their checkbook, getting a teenager their first debit card or teaching a young child how their coin goes through the coin machine and then gets deposited into the bank. Every day is a different experience.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
They’re a great resource and have many learning opportunities.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching a movie or just curling up with a good book.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Live the golden rule — treat others with courtesy and respect — and work as a team are guiding principles I try each day to live by.
