Banking Gives Greiner Chance to Make a Difference

The need for a career that was close to her sons’ school led Jodi Greiner to banking. She liked it so much, however, she stayed long after her kids graduated from high school. “There is so much “good” to be done in banking,” she said. “You really can make a difference if your heart is in it.” Greiner says the opportunity to advise high school and college-aged kids on making wise financial decisions is her favorite part of the job.

Today, Greiner — who has a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in business leadership from William Penn University — is a senior vice president at Peoples Savings Bank in Crawfordsville.

How did you get into banking as a career?
It was really born out of necessity. I needed a job that was close to my sons’ school. They were so young at the time, and I was struggling with logistical nightmares of getting them to and from school. It just so happened that the bank in town was hiring an assistant branch manager. I applied and that started my career in banking. I liked everything about the banking industry and so I stayed long after the kids graduated high school.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I could write a book about all the odd jobs I’ve had over the years, but the one that provided the most lessons was my job as a 911 dispatcher. While dispatching, you can go from calm to chaos with one phone call. Lives were literally on the line. It was extremely stressful and fast paced. I now have a very different appreciation for all personnel in emergency services. On the flip side of that, it was horrific to see the amount of people who abuse our services. It was a big eye opener for me.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
There is so much “good” to be done in banking. You really can make a difference if your heart is in it. My most favorite customers are the high school and college-aged kids. I love to coach them and advise them. Not all kids have parents that are teaching them and guiding them at home. Sometimes, their banker is the only one they have to help them make financial decisions. It’s a big deal and an opportunity and blessing for you to make a big difference. I feel like I do that, and that’s extremely important to me.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The timing of this question could not be more perfect. I just came off of a week at the Iowa School of Banking. The instructors in that school are world class in my opinion. I learned a tremendous amount in the week I was there. In addition, I met a ton of really smart, wonderful people that I get to call my friends now. That’s just one small example. The IBA is there to assist with compliance, training, advice, recommendations, products and services.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Remember those little boys I was telling you about earlier? They are now Army Airborne and Army Rangers, and they are all over the world. I visit them where they are as often as I can. I also love to plan and organize travel with my family and friends.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
